Market Assessment

Study of the Sea Grass Value Chain, Viet Nam, ITC, 2010

This value chain study was prepared by the International Trade Centre (ITC) for the programme ‘Green Production and Trade to Increase Income and Employment Opportunities for the Rural Poor’.

The study starts with an overview of the programme's target provinces and beneficiaries. The main value chain analysis begins with an outline of sea grass production in the district under review (Nga Son in Thanh Hoa Province), and in Viet Nam generally. The analysis includes value chain maps and descriptions of the value chain's main actors. The constraints faced by local actors in the sea grass value chain are then assessed. These constraints are divided into the following seven categories: input supply, production, market access, technology and product development, organisation and management, services, and financial constraints.

The second major part of the study proposes a strategy for upgrading the sea grass value chain. The authors highlight different market opportunities for each of the four provinces under review. They then propose a series of interventions that the programme may wish to undertake.
