Market Assessment

Study of the Sericulture Value Chain, Viet Nam, ITC, 2010

This value chain study was prepared by the International Trade Centre (ITC) for the programme ‘Green Production and Trade to Increase Income and Employment Opportunities for the Rural Poor’.

The study starts with an overview of the programme's target provinces and beneficiaries. The main value chain analysis begins with an outline of the national and international silk industries, and the main products in the sericulture value chain. The analysis includes value chain maps and descriptions of the main actors in the sericulture value chain. Seven types of constraints are identified: input supply, market access, technology and product development, organisation and management, services, financial and infrastructure and market regulation.

The second major part of the study proposes a strategy for upgrading the sericulture value chain. The authors highlight market opportunities for silk producers and vendors, through access to new export markets. The authors then propose a series of facilitation activities that the programme may wish to undertake.
