Integrating the Forest-Paper-Pulp Supply Chain in China, 2007

In 2000, China's largest newprint manufacturer started a new strategy that it termed the 'Forest-Pulp-Paper Integration,' which would substitute wood-pulp for straw-pulp by mobilizing local farmers to plant fast-growing trees. Farmers are supported by Huatai (the newsprint manufacturer) and the local government through technology, education and irrigation. About 6,000 households have participated in the project, planting 40,000 hectares of fast-growing trees in waste saline land, and generating a significant new source of income. At the same time, Huatai has successfully grown its newsprint business, while decreasing environmental impact and minimizing the risk of volatile import pulp prices.
